The Sanctuary of Truth is possibly Pattaya's most famous structure. The awe-inspiring 105-meter-tall hall on the headland to the north of Wongamat Beach is a one-of-a-kind monument in the entire world, carved entirely from teak wood. It was commissioned by a local business tycoon to operate as a center of respect for philosophy, art, culture, and spirituality, without being attached to a single religion, yet seeming like a combination of both.
With its beautifully realistic carvings of elephants, people and settings, mythological creatures and deities, the sanctuary is arguably best defined as a testament to Thai artistry. They adorn every single surface – both inside and out – of the building, paying homage to and reflecting the Ancient Vision of Earth, Ancient Knowledge, and Eastern Philosophy. Because none of the wood is treated or protected from the elements, older pieces progressively succumb to the rigors of the weather and environment and must be replaced, they are also a mirror of the ephemeral nature and never-ending toil of human existence. The sanctuary's development, which began in 1981, is an ongoing, never-ending project.
The Sanctuary of Truth was established with the belief that religious and philosophical truth has aided and nourished human civilization; in other words, it was created out of kindness derived from religion, philosophy, and art. It pays homage to the seven creators that man cannot survive without: Heaven, Earth, Father, Mother, Moon, Sun, and Stars, through intricate carvings and sculptures. Ancient Buddhist, Hindu, Brahman, and other spiritual and intellectual components are deeply buried in all of this.
Even if you don't believe in God, the structure is a sight to behold. It provides a deep sense of tranquility and a quiet reverence within that happens spontaneously without the need for notices requiring silence. As a result, it seems unusual that the sanctuary's large park-like grounds also include a small shooting range and regular dramatic sword-fighting performances. There are also elephant and horse rides, as well as a few gift stalls.
